In addition to following?BU application?requirements, Music Education applicants must also perform an?audition according to the repertoire?requirements for the?appropriate instrument. Please view the?Audition Information?for your instrument. Music Education applicants will also be required to meet with the Music Education faculty for an interview on the day of their audition.

Five Year Dual Degree Program
In addition to offering the four-year Bachelor of Music with a major in Music Education, the School of Music offers a five-year combined Bachelor of Music in Performance/Master of Music in Music Education.
The Five-Year Dual Degree Program in Performance and Music Education offers students the opportunity to complete both a?Bachelor of Music in Performance and a?Master of Music in Music Education in five years. Instead of choosing between Performance and Music Education, students pursue both of their interests. Upon completion of this program students will be eligible to apply for licensure to teach music in schools from the Massachusetts Department of Education. The curriculum includes all of the coursework and performance opportunities afforded to Performance majors along with the undergraduate and graduate coursework in Music Education. Students complete their student teaching internship and master’s projects in the fifth year.

Bachelor of Music, Composition & Theory
Admissions Requirements

Audition?Requirements
Composition applicants are accepted based on the strength of the composition portfolio and academic record. Applicants who wish to study with a faculty member on their primary instrument (instrumental/vocal) are required to audition. Composers should check the guidelines for?audition requirements for the appropriate instrument. Composition applicants who do not successfully place into an applied faculty member’s studio or who do not wish to take a primary studio audition will enter the piano track and may study with an advanced graduate student on piano. This piano track focuses on the keyboard skills necessary as a composer, and not those of a performer.
Composition Score Submission Requirement
In addition to?following?BU?application?requirements, Composition & Theory?applicants must upload three composition scores.?Scores submitted for application evaluation should be in good manuscript form and should demonstrate talent, some knowledge of contemporary music, and technical skill.
Scores are due by the following deadlines:
- November 1 for undergraduate Early Decision and Spring Transfer applicants
- January 8?for undergraduate Regular Decision applicants
- March 1 for fall transfer applicants
*We strongly suggest fall transfer applicants adhere to the Regular Decision timeline
Special Requirements for Transfer Applicants
Students applying to enter the major at the sophomore level must present to the department evidence of their work at a level equal to that of CFA MT 121 or 122 Basic Compositional Techniques. Composition majors are required to enroll in the honors-level theory sequence.

Bachelor of Arts, Music
